The Kerem Tunnel allows for a an experience that is unique in terms of hiking and riding.
The Kerem Tunnel, the first cycle tunnel in Israel is now open as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles Jerusalem, the capital city.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated during a celebration on Thursday attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov, and a slew of cyclists.

Jerusalem's rich past was the main reason that it was the most visited tourist destination during the time of its glory. Elkin stated that, in addition to its historic treasures and modern amenities, tourism has also been included in the Jerusalem city. "The opening of this tunnel is another element of the development of Jerusalem. It transforms the city into an attractive tourist destination for any kind of crowd within Israel and around the world."

Elkin's Ministry and the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project.

Elkin said that "The Kerem Tunnel Project is a central tool to realize the vision to redefine the idea of transport in Jerusalem." Elkin said that the new tunnel will connect to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will link with existing bike trails. It will also be made paved in its different areas. This will increase cycling and encourage green transportation in the capital.

In the 90s in the 1990s, the Kerem Tunnel was excavated to transfer the main sewer line from Gihon Corporation to the Sorek purification plant. It is now used as an infrastructure tunnel. It is also home to the fifth water line to Jerusalem by the Mekorot water company.
